Do you remember getting your "Scholastic News"or some similar magazine in grade school ? I always looked forward to getting the magazine and seeing what new topics they were talking about this month. I would love to share this experience with my students.
My students live in an area in OK that was recently affected by an EF5 tornado.
I teach 8th grade science and my students are at all different levels. Our school is classified as high poverty. Several of my students suffered damage and loss to their homes during the tornado.
So the supplies that they depend on having in class have been damaged and destroyed. The loss of these materials will increase the stress they feel while participating in required activities in the science class
My Project
One of the new requirements for my students is to be able to read, summarize and explain technical articles. Finding articles or reading passages that are near my students reading level and hopefully interesting to them is very difficult. This magazine subscription would give my students a chance to practice different reading strategies on technical articles that they find interesting.
This magazine subscription will help me better prepare my students for the new testing requirements.
This will also help my students start to figure out how to read and explain articles they might read in the daily paper. Thank you for contributing to my classroom.
