This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Teaching an 9th honors Literature class is challenging so I try to make my classroom as warm and welcoming as possible, especially for the freshmen that are experiencing high school for the first time. I encourage all students to get invested in class by bringing in material about current topics.
My students are primarily honors students that are passionate about learning and achieving success at all levels.
I teach at a school on the outskirts of Atlanta and over 80% of student population is on free and reduced lunch. The school is considered a title 1 school. The student body is made up of 90% minorities and the remaining 10% are considered white. Most of the students at the school ride the bus because of lack of transportation otherwise. Despite all of the obstacles, the students here are very outgoing and take their education very seriously. Many times students are here just as late as the teachers in order to receive tutoring or help other classmates. The school buildings are some of the oldest in this area but that does not stop the learning going on in the classroom.
My Project
Students will be reading the narrative of Frederick Douglass to partner with the self-determination unit. During this unit students will be reading this novel in small groups through jigsaw. Each group will have a different section of the novel to read. Once students are done reading their section, they will analyze it by using higher order thinking skill through Bloom's taxonomy. Students will be asked to go through the lower levels of Bloom's (remembering) all the way to the highest level (creating). The final product that the students will create for their individual section is the Bloom's Ball where each level is addressed through visuals and analysis. Students will not only learn about Frederick Douglass but they will learn how to analyze as they read and push their skill to a higher level of achievement through Bloom's taxonomy.
Students will learn that it is not okay to give up when things get hard.
They will understand that any struggles they go through are to make them better and to keep pushing themselves no matter how bad they think life is. It is really important for these students especially to know that struggle is a part of life and the important part is how you can overcome it. Students will see the struggles that not only Frederick Douglass went through, but also everyday people in today's society.
