Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Many of my students have six or more risk factors, such as coming from low-income, single-parent households, having multiple disabilities, below grade level achievement, and being minority students coming from homes where English is not the primary language, etc. The students are enthusiastic about learning and want to learn, whether it is about our environment, Earth Day, dealing with anxiety, or being new to the country. Sometimes they have difficulties expressing themselves or being distracted. Once focused, they become engaged, and active learners. Most of the students in my classes have Autism, dyslexia, or an Attention Deficit Disorder. We use technology daily. Our class needs headphones that will last, because there are so many distractions during the school year, so that we need to modify our environment to maximize learning. I also need a document camera so students can focus on the work. We use technology daily at our campus but we also participate in low-tech activities.

During my classes, students have differentiated activities to engage in that are online or pencil-paper.

Some students may need to watch a video or engage in an online game or activity. Some may just need headphones to establish a quiet environment so they can focus. I may need to share work from other classes by using a document camera compatible with current technology. Students may write responses with pencils. Students are successful when basic needs are met with snacks or with rewards as documented in Individual Education Plans.
