High Tech Assistive Technology Communication Board for Non-Verbal ASD Students

My Students

I am a special education teacher and behavior specialist in a Title I school in New Orleans. We serve a student population that is a 96% economically disadvantaged population. Our students include 13% that have special education designations and 9% that have limited English proficiency.

I serve students in a Pre K-5th grade self-contained classroom, and my students are primarily nonverbal or have limited verbal skills.

My students need every opportunity and resource possible to give them the best chances at success. Many times this mean giving them access to technology to provide a means for functional communication.

My Project

Over half of the students in my class are nonverbal or have limited verbal abilities and currently do not have access to high tech communication technology in the classroom. The inability to communicate their feelings and needs often leads to frustration and behavior issues as a result.

This IPad would help my students learn to use high tech assistive technology for functional communication.

Being able to advocate for their own needs is very empowering and would help with their independence and self-esteem. Thank you for considering my project and for being a part of the worthwhile causes on DonorsChoose!
