Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My scholars have the knowledge and power to change this world. They will solve a math problem faster than you, respectfully win a debate against you, write an argumentative essay that will completely convince you, and read more books than you in a week. My scholars are full of big, bold and beautiful ideas waiting to give society.
So you may be incredibly shocked when I share that more than half of them are not reading on grade level.
Studies show by the third grade, scholars should know how to read. But every year, I get kids starting fourth grade not knowing their letter sounds, how to blend sounds, or decode multisyllabic words. This is an emergency.
My Project
I recently did a deep data dive with the current kids in my classroom and came to the realization that a majority of my lower performing readers are all English language learners, where English is not their first language.
My ESL scholars are not meeting 4th grade standards, continually score below grade level, and struggle in the classroom because they speak another language.
I strongly believe that headphones for every scholar will provide equity within the classroom and enhance opportunities to meet and exceed grade level standards being asked of them. Headphones allow for increase engagement, prevent interruptions during work time, and create a calm and productive learning environment.
I use online programs like Freckle and BookNook, which benefit ESL in my classroom tremendously. These online programs give my low performing readers differentiated practice with word study, phonics, and comprehension through books at their own reading level. Ultimately moving them quickly to the next reading level. These programs speak to them and have them speak back. So imagine my current problem, when scholars are practicing their reading on these programs, the classroom turns into a loud mess of sounds, and scholars are not able to focus on their own learning. Headphones will fix this. Scholars will finally have focused instruction, and access to their own sounds; Blending and decoding words without distractions, without hearing others.
