This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever seen the smile of a child when they feel accomplished and proud of themselves? Well I have, and I hope to continue. This year I am determined to help my students become enthusiastic about reading and continue to feel proud of their development as readers. The more they read the better!
My ELL (English Language Learner) students are nine years old and in 3rd grade.
They come from different backgrounds but share one thing; they are all intimidated by reading. These bright minds have impressed me from the start. Motivation, dedication and hard work is not lacking in these young children. Though this school is in a low income neighborhood, my students aspire to be great things including doctors, lawyers and scientists. They definitely have the ability and brains to become successful in life, but they need to have a great foundation in reading. My students have started to develop that love of reading. At times I catch some of them taking books downstairs to lunch and sharing them with friends. In our school we participate in a reading program where the students take a quiz after reading a book. My students want to continue taking quizzes and feeling successful.
My Project
For so long my students have felt unsuccessful in reading because of the language barrier, but this year that will change. Since September I have tried to promote the importance of reading upon them, and many of them have made great efforts. We have shared chapter books as a class but unfortunately supplies are becoming limited. It is very difficult to come across high interest, lower level chapter books. I am requesting sets of books that are both interesting and of lower level so that my students have more options and never run out of supplies. The books will give the students choices and keep them interested in reading. I want them to continue feeling enthusiastic and excited about reading.
This project will help my students become successful readers.
As a former ELL student, I see myself in my students and understand their desire to succeed. I am determined that this year I will see many smiling faces full of pride and enthusiasm for reading. I am determined to see my students confident in their reading abilities. This can be the first step in making their dreams come true.
