Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In the heart of a community that thrives on resilience and diversity, our high school math class stands as a beacon of hope and potential for students primarily from BIPOC backgrounds, all of whom come from low-income households. As a Teach For America Corps member, I'm committed to the belief that every student can reach their full potential given the right tools, guidance, and opportunities. However, our journey is fraught with challenges, as we navigate the realities of being a Title I Tier I school.
Our students possess an innate eagerness to learn but the lack of support has kept their desire for knowledge unfulfilled.
Therefore, I propose a series of math projects designed to ignite passion, foster understanding, and create lasting learning experiences. These projects include engaging in-class activities like tarsia puzzles, which promote critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving, and hands-on activities that make abstract math concepts tangible and understandable. Moreover, my goal is to provide each student with their own notebook, ensuring that they have the means to explore ideas and document their learning journey.
The specific items requested for these projects have been carefully chosen to address the unique needs of our students. Tarsia puzzles and hands-on activities are not merely tools for engagement; they are pathways to understanding, designed to bridge the gap between theoretical math and its practical applications. Notebooks will serve as personal learning artifacts, enabling students to track their progress, reflect on their learning, and cultivate a sense of ownership and accountability.
