This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The horticulture program provides students with a healthy fun activity outdoors to promote well-being and leadership opportunities. Students are learning where food comes from and how to grow organic vegetables.
Students in our area face daily threats of gang violence and drugs.
Our school is a charter high school successfully providing our students with activities to help them transition to college, vocational training, jobs, and many into the military. The horticulture program focuses on leadership, team building, and work related skills for building a successful portfolio and resume to use during and after high school.
My Project
We desperately need additional supplies to enhance our garden. A greenhouse indoors and planting kit will allow students currently not part of the horticulture program a chance on a daily basis to view and watch the growth of seeds and plants indoors. By reaching out to other students currently not in our program, we can expand and reach other students who have little to no knowledge about where their food comes from.
I grew up in foster care with a dad who shared with me the joy of gardening and the outdoors.
I found a wonderful life watching plants grow and taking those plants to the table as a main source of vegetables during the summer. I want to share the joy with my students who also come from broken homes and/or foster care.
