This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Are you a life-long reader? Do you know the joys of literature? Do you value being able to get your information from more than one printed resource? Well, I want to pass these reading habits on to my students. In order to do that however, I need more high interest books at their level.
I teach at City of Angels, a K-12 independent study school within LAUSD.
The students who attend City of Angels have not been successful for a myriad of reasons. Especially at the high school level that I teach, it is imperative that we help them raise their independent reading level, which is often 3 or more years behind grade level, in order to help them achieve future success. City of Angels is really a last chance for some students to receive a high school diploma.
My Project
The books I am requesting are for independent "free reading" - supplemental reading that will appeal to the students' interests. This reading is meant to help them get into books more, and is supplemental to required literature in their English classes. The books on the list include topics of interest to teens: war, tragedy, end of the world (in the highly suspenseful "The Road"), eating disorders and other diary type books. These are books students will be able to check out from me, like a library, so that they can always have something to read with them, so that homework reading doesn't feel like work.
Again, I teach students who have already not experienced success in the public school system.
This could be their last chance to get the all important high school diploma. Getting their independent reading level up to their grade level is extremely important and will help them in all other subjects.
