My Students

Wouldn't it be a splendid sight to see all students walking around their high school campus with their transfixed faces plunged into an open book? I want to see this happen! Can you help me?!

I am the librarian at a huge urban high school in California.

More than half of our students are not yet proficient in their literacy skills as demonstrated by state test scores. Too many students admit to me that they despise books. I want to change this around. I want to inspire a culture of reading on my high school campus.

My Project

My students need 10 copies of 3 riveting book titles - Jellicoe Road, The Merchant of Death, and Bliss; and contact paper to preserve the books for a high school library sponsored book club. It is my hope that by facilitating a weekly book club at lunch in the library, students will be encouraged to read. I hope this literary club will expose students who may not readily pick up a book to the joy of literature. I hope it will change students perceptions of reading and transform them into engaged readers. I hope it will introduce new books to students who already devour literature and sustain their interest in the written word.

Together we can stimulate students who do not have immediate access to books to read. We can help young people realize the sheer ecstasy and thrill of embarking on reading adventures. If we encourage young adults to read more, their grades, scholastic scores, and life goals will most likely soar.
