Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, I see the challenges my students face both in and out of the classroom everyday.
For the past several years, my students have not have any preforming arts education- no dance, no instrumental music, no choir, no theater.
For students that will not experience these classes outside of school, this is unacceptable. This year, I am being given the opportunity to change the lives of these students through dance education. My class will incorporate music with movement in order to pursue topics of general dance, world dance, dance technology, and more.
Through student teaching in this district, I have seen the joy that dance education brings these students. Dance gives them a place to be creative, expressive, and to discover and grow their interests. With your help, my students would be able to experience and thrive through a quality arts education.
My Project
In building our dance program, we are focusing on making the performing arts relevant to 21st century learning. Most recently, my middle school students have been focused on analyzing dance on camera. While watching and hypothesizing the purpose of dance and music videos has served a great purpose, creating a dance film of their own is something these students are advocating for.
Your support of this project will help to improve my students' understanding and creation of a dance film.
With a GoPro camera and accessories, my 6th-8th grade students will be able to 1) research and identify a purpose for creating a dance film, 2) create movement and music to support their film's purpose, 3) as a class, shoot their dance film using various angles and props, and 4) share their dance film with the school at the Spring Showcase.
By funding this project, you are supporting the connection of dance to the STEAM community as well as helping provide a quality dance education to the students of Newark, New Jersey. Thank you and full STEAM ahead!
