My Students

Did you ever have interest in reading a book that you couldn't get a copy of? Did you ever have a desire to read something besides the typical literature your English teacher stocked on the class library's bookshelves? My high-level readers need and want more options!

My school has a thrilling new curriculum -- students read in groups (called literature circles) during class!

My students are middle grade (6th and 8th) lovers of reading when they get the chance to choose what to read. Many do not have access to lots of books at home, yet they want to read interesting and exciting material. Often they want to read about real-world events and mysteries, and we don't have enough sets of non-fiction or mystery books to go around. My school, in a low-income, highly diverse community, has a population of students with a wide range of reading abilities. We have a wide range of books for our low-level readers, but we need more books for our high-level readers! In literature circles, we allow choice in the curriculum, and we give students time to read and talk about books they grow to love.

My Project

I've requested sets of non-fiction titles (and 1 mystery title) that will pique student interest because of the currency level -- they want to read about things that affect them, and they are concerned about matters relating to national health, crime, and obesity. I am requesting 4 copies of "Fast Food Nation," 5 copies of "The Art of Racing in the Rain," 5 copies of "Nightmare Joan Lowery Nixon," and 5 copies of "Spies of Mississippi: The True Story of the Spy Network that Tried to Destroy the Civil Rights Movement." By getting to have choices in reading, I hope my students will develop more interest in reading for pleasure and will gain the skills necessary to strengthen their reading comprehension. In the literature circle classes that I teach, students read in small groups and discuss the material and complete discussion packets that track what they're learning. Not only do they learn communication skills from working in small, intimate groups, they also learn the techniques that good readers use to understand texts--such as discussing points of confusion and clarifying information and vocabulary that they don't understand while reading.

Thus far, the literature circle class format is popular and many students enjoy working in small groups.

All of the English Language Arts teachers share book sets, so a few sets can be available to and help hundreds of students! With your donations, I can provide more choices and thus have even more student motivation and buy-in. In the grand scheme of things, developing interest in reading in my class will, I hope, foster a life-long sense of the importance of reading and learning!
