My Students

My middle school enthusiastic, creative, bright individuals and they are enthusiastic about reading and sharing their reading with others. My school's 6th, 7th and 8th graders are readers that get excited about new books!

All kids deserve to find books they can connect to; the best part of my job is seeing kids get excited about a book, especially kids who thought they hated reading.

Our school library reflects the student population, and includes lots of books about people that are Black, Latinx and other people of color, kids who are differently-abled, kids from a range of social, economic, and religious backgrounds, LGBTQIA kids, immigrants, and refugees, etc. My students also love reading humor, graphic novels, thrillers, and books that have been made into TV shows and movies.

My Project

Informational texts become increasingly important as children progress through school, and yet children in early grades have very few options for appropriate non-fiction books or non-fiction books that represent a wide diversity of experiences or historical events.

Non-fiction books provide young adults with information, new perspectives, and life skills that can be used to address challenges in their lives.

My students deserve to be educated on these topics now more than ever! YA nonfiction books stand out is that they’re often on exciting or interesting topics and they’re written in the same style that makes YA fiction so appealing.
