This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The number one complaint I get from students is that reading is boring. For years I have tried to remedy this debacle by providing my students with engaging texts about interesting topics. With Common Core more prevalent than ever, I need texts that support the standards and captivate my students.
As the reading support teacher I have the privilege of spending my days with students who are struggling with reading.
I work with students in kindergarten through fifth grade. They are strong willed and filled with personality. They are bursting with curiosity and the will to become stronger individuals everyday. They are extremely creative and love trying new things, even if it might not work. In our room, we learn from our mistakes and work to improve ourselves inside and outside of the classroom. My students attend a high poverty school with Title I services that I provide. English language learners make up over half of our student population. What our school lacks in resources, we make up for in determination to succeed.
My Project
I am requesting What's the Point? Comparing Text Centers. These centers provide the students with two different passages to compare with a graphic organizer. The students will compare point of view and themes, which aligns with the standards. There are fiction and nonfiction texts. I chose this resource because it would be a great instructional activity to complete within my short instructional time frame with the students. By having sets for grades 2-5, I will be able to differentiate my instruction to best fit the students' needs.
I am also requesting High-Interest Nonfiction Text Sets. These text sets focus on popular and engaging nonfiction topics: weather, inventions, plants, animals, wonders of the world, and space. Each set comes with newspapers, brochures, magazine articles, and Internet pages for real world reading practice. The students will be able to compare and contrast not only the information, but also how the information is presented through the different text types.
In a forty five minute time frame, I must provide the students with literacy lessons that connect to the Common Core standards, support the skills and strategies the classroom teacher is teaching, and ensure that the students do not leave my room groaning that they hate reading.
A major focus all our grade levels are taking on this year is comparing and contrasting texts. The materials I am requesting will help me to support the students in mastering this skill.
