My students need a weekly subscription to Time for Kids. We have been using old ones that are 7-8 years old, but they fell apart and we had to toss them!
Students love technology, no doubt--but they also love the slick, colorful feel of a magazine in their hands. Time for Kids is so relevant and kid-friendly. Even the old copies we'd been using keep them engaged and interested.
I have 98 active, curious 6th graders in my Language Arts classes.
We keep busy with all sorts of activities that are designed for their curiosity, activity level, and interests. One of the favorite activities has been using the 7-8 year old Time for Kids magazines that several teachers in the building pass from classroom to classroom. Students love the high-interest articles and bold, captivating text features (photographs, text-boxes, graphs, fact files, etc.) We teachers love the way we can teach reading strategies with these magazines without the students even being aware of it! Unfortunately our magazines became too care-worn and we could no longer use them!
My Project
Because the magazines feature high-interest stories, they foster a great deal of discussion, debate, and dialog. We use the magazines as part of the curriculum, but also as a segue to many innovative learning activities--without the students ever being aware that they're learning real-life reading skills and applications! Furthermore, there are four other teachers in my grade-level, and we have always passed the materials and activities we develop to each other, which ultimately benefits about 400 students.
Having a class-set (30) of Time For Kids, high-interest magazines, will help students at all levels to grow as readers.
Furthermore, by sparking interest in worldly concerns, students also learn about how they can become better citizens and hopefully, make a difference.
