My Students
I teach juniors and seniors in a rural school district. My students are exceptional in that they primarily take college level English courses as seniors. These students strive to go beyond the basic skills and work toward achieving college and career readiness. At my school, almost one hundred percent of the graduates go on to some kind of college education.
One of the mottos of my school encourages excellence at all levels, and my students achieve academic excellence on a daily basis in my classes.
My Project
Personal choice in reading is a top priority for me as I work to engage student readers. Building a diverse classroom library that appeals to all readers is a major component of this. Many of my teen young males enjoy reading true stories, and those same students are often the most reluctant readers.
Reading non-fiction texts will engage reluctant readers who prefer true stories, and increase critical reading skills for them at the same time. My students are primarily all college-bound and need these challenging, engaging texts to build their stamina for reading before they get to college and have even higher reading expectations thrust upon them.
