My Students

This class is a brand-new initiative of our district to support students with social and emotional learning gaps and other disabilities to have an opportunity for inclusive education in their neighborhood schools near their peers.

Our students are some of the kids that were most heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and some that have demonstrated the most resilience.

Students with emotional and behavioral disorders thrive on routine and structure, and the pandemic threw that routine into chaos, with frequent school closures, quarantines, and transition plans being canceled. However, as we have supported these students through the traumatic experiences of the past two years, we've seen incredible growth and development and a willingness to give it their best shot, even when the stakes were high and the odds were low.

My Project

Our students, all of whom have Individual Education Programs and receive special education services, require specialized instruction, often with one-on-one assistance from aides and teachers, in order to access their free and appropriate public education. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, including nationwide school closures, frequent two-week soft closures for schools with numerous cases, and teachers and students out on quarantine led to my students struggling to access their education.

My students need these resources in order to fill their learning gaps brought on by the closures and quarantines related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With a variety of high-quality material at their instructional level, including resources from all academic subjects and social-emotional learning, we'll have the opportunity to give my students the free and appropriate public education they are guaranteed via the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Providing my students with socially appropriate materials that are used in other classes will help them feel more engaged with their typically developing peers, as well as create an opportunity to reach them at their instructional level in order to catch up on missed skills.
