My school library needs 29 high interest books such as "Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets" to supplement the current collection.
Only 23% of the African American students at our school site test proficient in language arts.
We need additional reading material that is of high interest to encourage voluntary reading which has been shown to be the best predictor of reading comprehension, vocabulary growth, spelling, grammar, and writing style.
The students visit the school library with their class for 40 minutes, once a week. There, the library teacher, who is on campus two days a week, introduces students to different authors and genres, and generally instills the love of learning through reading. The more books that are on the shelves, the better the chance the librarian will be able to find that "just right book." The latest graphic novels, including Captain Underpants and X-men are listed as are sports books, including books on the San Francisco 49er's. There is a huge demand for Dr. Seuss books for the beginning readers, and I have included several titles on my list.
Your donation of books may well supply the spark that sets these students on the path to becoming avid readers and life-long learners.
