My Students
The pandemic has hit everyone hard and we are especially noticing that in our classrooms. Our students have forgotten how to love school, love learning, and we are seeing more and more that they are struggling to find texts they connect with.
It is important to me, not only as an English teacher but a lover of literature, that my students be able to go to my bookshelves and find something that engages them, something they connect with, something they enjoy reading.
Over the years, our student population has changed and I am hoping to build a classroom library that reflects that change. The numbers of Latinx, ELL, Pacific Islander, and reluctant readers overall has increased and the books on my shelves need to reflect those needs.
My Project
More and more, we are struggling to find engaging books for students to read. They are looking for things that are new and exciting, up and coming, relevant to what they are seeing in the world. I want to get good books in my students' hands.
I want them reading, I want them thinking, I want them writing.
The research shows that the more you can get a book in their hands, talk about them and surround them with literacy, the better readers and writing they will become. These will serve as choice reading books they read in class and at home; books they choose to engage in, so let's make them engaging!
