My students need small group sets of a variety of high interest, modern texts by great authors like Tim O'Brien, Jeannette Walls, and Chuck Palahniuk.

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Senioritis has arrived early this year in my classroom! My once excited students have transformed into unrecognizable creatures who blink as if they should be hibernating through the winter. To jolt my students awake and excite them into literature again, I need a series of high-interest novels.
I teach twelfth grade English in the poorest Congressional district in the country, in a school with some of the most heartbreaking and inspiring children in the world.
Nearly 94% of my students qualify for free lunch and all of them are in need of as much extra support and help as they can get.
My current group of students is particularly precious because they are our school's first graduating class. With their first steps into college and the real world, they set the precedent for the classes to come. The texts that I have chosen will both inspire & challenge them. They are texts of embarking on great adventures - much like the journey they will begin in June. They are novels of great sorrow, great joy - they are novels of life.
My Project
My students need a variety of high interest texts that are relatable, motivational, and exciting. Too often are English classrooms relegated to following the canon - oftentimes losing students in the old rhetoric. My students deserve to have an opportunity to savor language & life through novels that embody what life is like TODAY - not 100 years ago.
Currently, my school does not have the funding needed to update classroom texts. The books that we currently have are falling apart and antiquated. There is not enough variety to really encompass the many reading levels of my students - many of my students find themselves either reading a book that is too hard or a book too easy. As English teachers, we are stuck teaching the same texts over and over again - texts that continue to go over our students' heads in diction & language. My students deserve to read about characters that seem truly real to them, characters that they see in everyday life.
With your generous donations, you will be able to rekindle in my students their love of reading and, most importantly, a love of books.
Technology is on the verge of driving books into extinction and it has become even more essential for us to remind kids how wonderful it is to hold a book in your hands and to treat it as a dear friend. I have no doubt that your small gift to our classroom will be the catalyst to many life-changing experiences in both the real and imaginary world.
