This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have about three months of distance learning under their belts, but they are far from experts. They struggled to stay engaged, keep track of complicated schedules, and complete their work digitally.
What I noticed about teaching during the pandemic was that the materials available to me digitally were less likely to reflect the cultural and linguistic diversity of my students.
Most digital resources available through our curriculum offer token representation at best, and very few non-white authors.
My Project
My school hasn't yet announced a finalized plan for next school year, but we are likely looking at a partial in-person, partial at-home blended learning experience. I've found it difficult to find high-quality texts written by Black/Indigenous/People of Color authors within the resources provided by my school, and I'd like to supplement that by adding these books to my read-aloud library.
I'd love to give my students access to high-quality, high-interest read-aloud books that also reflect greater diversity than the online component of our curriculum.
I can do both live readings for my students, using my document camera to show the illustrations and text in greater detail, as well as prerecorded readings modeling specific comprehension skills that students can then practice with their own reading. These books will be so useful to supplement the online resources we have, but they will also become beloved read-alouds when we return to the classroom.
