Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach high school English at a school in which at least 85% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Many of my students read below grade level. Therefore, it is difficult to get the students to read independently, and yet doing so is the only way to help them improve reading skills. That is why I am asking for some books that I know (from past experience) they will be interested in: Go Ask Alice, A Child Called It, Always Running, and Rose That Grew From Concrete. Students feel that they can relate to many of the themes in these books. I think that is why they are so interested in these particular titles. If these books were donated to my classroom, my students would have books to read when they are done with an assignment, or after school. These books will be read for years to come by my students, and will hopefully motivate them to find more books of interest to them. If I can get my students hooked on one book, that may be just the catalyst needed for them to get to the library on their own. You can help my students become better readers, and in turn, more successful students in the long run. Thanks for your support!
