This year's eighth graders are wild about reading. I find some of them reading at every moment possible -- at the beginning of class, between activities, and sometimes even during group work they are supposed to be participating in!
These teens love books -- they love strong characters, action-filled plots, and killer endings (literally and figuratively).
There are so many great, new books being released, but they are not always at the levels of our readers. Most of the new young-adult literature is written at a high level, while books for middle-grade kids are often, well, written for kids, not teens.
My Project
It's important to me to have books for every reader. Included in this project are a number of high-interest books that are written at an accessible level for readers of all levels but especially those who may be struggling just a bit. These books are about teens with realistic conflicts that teenagers can relate to. In the past, having these type of books in my classroom library have made a tremendous difference for those who can not yet read the longer, more difficult books.
Helping to fund this project will increase the selection of books available to all students but especially to those students who need just a bit more practice before moving on to the higher level books.
