This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year, I am teaching a third grade ESL and special education class. The group will consist of about 30 English Language Learners, ages 8-9 years old, with diverse backgrounds and each of them bringing their own diverse needs. Most students come from Spanish speaking homes and are emergent bilinguals. Many of my students are struggling readers, reading at kindergarten level. They lacked access to books and in-person literacy instruction during the height of the pandemic.
My Project
This year, in my 3rd grade class of English learners and students with disabilities, many of my students are reading below "third grade level." The books in my library are not appropriate for them, and are not allowing me to meet their instructional needs.
I am requesting sets of four for each book, which are mostly at kindergarten and first grade level.
These materials will allow me to conduct guided reading lessons with my students who are struggling the most.
I want to provide my students with high-interest level, high-quality books that will help them grow and engage in reading. Students are currently learning in a blended model, so they are in school 50% of the time and at home 50% of the time. Due to the amount of screen time students are experiencing, I believe it is important for them to have access to a variety of physical books.
