Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Dear Donor,
I am a second grade bilingual special education teacher in a high-need, community school in the Bronx, NY.
One of the major problems with respect to literacy in my class is that the students need to practice their high frequency (sight) words at home as well as in school. Although some of them do this at home, I have found that with a high frequency word ring that I received from a colleague and some index cards that I punched holes in to make sight word cards, I have been able to get some of the students more motivated by holding "sight word bees".
I line up the students in front of me and flip through my ring of words and have them identify the words. They are getting so much better! I have lent my ring to some students, but am afraid that one day I may not get the ring back or that some of the word cards will have fallen off.
Donor, I would like for the class to receive take-home sight words rings, so they could practice their sight words with their own rings at home. The markers and index cards will help them write more sight words on blank cards that they can then add to the rings.
The chalk will help me write high-frequency words on the board that they should then copy down on the index cards.
Donor,
As you know, practice makes perfect. If the students receive these materials, they will be able to really learn their high frequency words and have a means to study these English words with their parents, so they may become better readers.
Thank you!
