My Students
Imagine wanting to read a book so much. It's a book all your friends are talking about. But that book is just too hard for you. And the books that are at your level are the books the little kids are reading. This is a problem that my students face daily.
I work with a great group of 24 English Language Learners in grades K-5.
My students speak Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, and English. They are working hard to master the skills they need to be successful in life. I love coming to school each day to work with such hard-working students who are so excited to learn. They attend a large school of about 1000 students. We have a great school that has recently been designated by our state as a reward school for our students' high achievement and our work at closing the achievement gap. YOU can help us continue to improve!
My Project
My students in 3rd-5th grades are working hard to improve their English reading skills to catch up with their peers. They often get frustrated because the books they want to read and that their friends are reading are just too hard for them. At the same time, they don't want to read most books at their level because they were written for younger students and just don't hold their interest. I am asking for a variety of hi-lo books to provide more options for these students. Hi-lo stands for high-interest, low-readability. Basically, they are books about topics that interest older students, but the books are written at a lower reading level. They also look like books for older students so students don't feel embarrassed to read them in front of their friends.
The more students read, the more they know and the more their skills improve.
I know that these books will motivate my older students to practice reading. They will feel confident in reading these books in front of their friends. Please consider donating to this project, whether it's a little or a lot. Even a donation of one dollar is truly appreciated!
