This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My middle school students are amazing, energetic, and outgoing! These students are held to high expectations to be the best version of themselves: working collaboratively to demonstrate teamwork, sharing up to date information, utilizing the latest technology, and providing encouragement and support to each other as they face challenges to meet Common Core Standards (CCS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

My incredible seventh-grade students come to school early and ready to learn about science and technology in the world they live in.

They love to interact and engage with the world around them through hands-on investigations developing models, communicating in team problem-solving discussions, class question-and-answer posts, as well as using evidence to argue pros and cons in debates. I want to make sure they have the tools as well as the skills to obtain any goal they set for themselves.

My students come from diverse backgrounds. I teach at a Title 1 school in Chicago where most of our students receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch. Many of our students have special needs or are English language learners (ELLs). Despite their hardships, these impressive kids achieve above and beyond the standards set at this 1+ ranked school!

My Project

The students in our community often begin school without the most needed school supplies. Wouldn't it be great to help those students without supplies feel a little less anxious and more prepared for the school year? Think of the difference you can make in my students' lives.

I begin instruction on the first day and students engage from the moment they enter my life science class.

Glue sticks, markers, crayons, and post-its will be used to guide them throughout the year to create projects in science. Supplies will be used on question-and-answer boards within the classroom to guide student exploration and teacher feedback for each unit. While learning about cells and the human body, students will use supplies to diagram structures and functions in plants and animals. Students will also label DNA code and trace family traits while learning about genetics. Students will need the supplies while learning about ecology and evolution: classifying animals in an ecosystem, diagramming food chains, and making timelines to discuss the history of the earth.

Diagramming, labeling, and creating projects within my life science class help enrich the academic environment for all learners, including those with special needs and those with limited English language proficiency.
