This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am the Esports coach at a small high school in Harrison, New Jersey. 83% of our students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. I have been fighting for this Esports program for five years. It was finally approved, but funding was not there. We are constantly fighting an uphill battle trying to show the benefits of Esports in a high school setting. My students and I have worked tirelessly to get this up and running. We started out with over 100 students in the program and are now down to 4-5 kids. We tried several fundraisers but only made about $840. With a $1,250 membership fee for our league (at a reduced rate due to us being a Title I school), we were not even able to cover the cost of that. We made shirts but had virtually no sales. The kids were devastated. We finally got a few more games approved so we are able to expand, but they are all PC games and we don't have PCs. Being that we are in an economically disadvantaged area, it is tough to get parents to allow students to bring in their own PCs, if they even have one. It is usually the family computer that does not leave the home.
With your help, we would be able to take our program to the next level.
We would be able to reach many more students that want to play and compete for hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships. We would be honored to receive even one PC for our program. I will not give up on the 96 kids that can't afford to go to Esports anymore or can't participate because they don't have equipment. Any little bit helps. Thank you for your time.
