Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the first time you read a book by yourself? It's a magical moment, which my kindergarten students have yet to experience. Reading opens the doors to many different opportunities, opportunities which I want my students to be able to experience.
My students are a diverse group of five year olds.
I teach a mixed group of native English speakers, along with students who are learning English. Most students' families speak English, Spanish, or Arabic, but there are a handful of students whose families speak other languages. Most of my students come from low-income families, and my school is classified as a high-poverty, Title 1 school.
My Project
"Hey, who peed on my rug?"
Although it has been cleaned many times, my classroom rug has been the site of some unfortunate accidents, from bathroom accidents to more typical snack spills. It has layers of masking tape, where I've labeled students' assigned carpet seats. The edges and corners are unraveling. My current rug does not have a non-skid backing, so it slips when a student walks a little too quickly over it. My students deserve a new rug.
My classroom rug is the site of all of my whole-group instruction. When students are on the rug, they are close to me and are best able to pay attention and learn. We spend a lot of time on the rug! I am requesting a rug with rectangular markings, so that each student has his or her own clearly demarcated space. With the new rug, my students will be able to learn without the distractions of unraveling threads, masking tape name labels, or other students too close to them.
My students need to develop strong reading and math skills in kindergarten, so they can start their academic careers on track for success.
Students learn and practice reading and math skills each day during carpet time; it is critical to their success. Thank you for supporting my students by providing them with a safe, comfortable place to learn!
