Energy, passion, excitement, and determination are all words that come to mind when I'm asked to describe the room full of scholars that walk in my door every morning for 180 days. Their home lives are varied and a large percentage of them come from families that qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. Many of them have very supportive, involved parents, and others have parents whose attention is spread very thin. But no matter their lives at home, they are so excited to learn new things and love coming to school each day!
My Project
My goal every year is not just to guide my students in becoming capable readers, but also excited readers. What better way to get a child excited to read than to have characters that mirror themselves and their friends?
This project includes books that have main characters that represent African American, African, Muslim, Middle Eastern, and Hispanic cultures.
I specifically chose books that contain a positive representation of these cultures, because I want my students to see themselves reflected in a positive light within these books. If I am able to add these books to my classroom library, I know students will light up when they see characters that look like themselves and their friends and family.
