This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a high poverty area of Los Angeles. All of my students receive a free breakfast and lunch throughout the school year. Many of the families in this community have two income households and, still, barely make ends meet. Having a tough family where priorities revolve around needs and not wants can make it tough for my little Kinder Kuties to learn and grow at home. Being safe and having food on the table is what's the most important. There isn't much time or money to take the kids out to learn and explore.

My Project

My students love love love to run, jump, skip and play, but it isn't always possible in the neighborhood they are growing up in. Living in apartments and small homes without outdoor areas make it very difficult to play outside. While there is a nearby park, many of my students don't have access to it since both parents work long hours. When I asked them what would make them more active and want to play outside more, my students pointed to their preschool neighbors. They have such fun equipment to run with, splash with and explore with. It's hard to explain to 4 and 5 year olds that funding for these materials is limited. These materials could really help my students stay active when we play here at school. It is exactly the things they have been asking for but I have not been able to provide. Not only will they be having fun and getting physically fit but they will learning academics as well. My students love challenges and doing activities that require strategy. These items will do just that. Playing outside can be pretty fun in and of itself but can you imagine the motivation they'll have with all these great materials. The sand and water table and its accessories will keep the kids active by engaging them in different water and sand activities. We can create obstacle courses and learn about science in the process. Outdoor bowling is the best. Now, just add letters and now we've got a combo that can't be beat! Oh I just can't wait to get my kinders active and learning! Now I just need to teach them about patience and hope. "Sometimes you get exactly what you ask for... from someone who wants to help you!" Thanks for your consideration!
