Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I teach 2nd grade in an inclusion classroom at a small public school. I have 25 amazing students in my class! Nearly all of my students qualify for free lunch and over half of my students are English Language Learners. Many of my students who are English Language Learners are unable to read in English at the 2nd grade level. Many of them struggle to read books that are written at a Kindergarten level. Yet, these students do not want to read what they consider "baby books." They want to read chapter books like their classmates! Our classroom library needs books that look like chapter books, but that are written at a kindergarten or 1st grade level. These books are high-interest but easy to read! With these easy chapter books my struggling readers will have the opportunity to practice reading skills such as word recognition, fluency and comprehension. I have asked for these easy-to-read books in sets of 2 or 3 so that my students can read with a peer buddy or myself to practice their reading fluency. My students are always eager to share what they are reading, so using peers as tutors is a great way to get my students reading and keep them excited about it! Through your generous donation my struggling readers will be able to read chapter books just like their classmates! Even better, since the books come in sets of two, they will be able to read with a peer buddy or myself to reinforce and practice their reading skills! My students will be able to enjoy reading books that are at their reading level and foster a lifelong love of reading - a skill crucial to all academic areas. Thank you so much for taking the time to read my proposal!
