Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach an intervention program at a large inner city elementary school. My students come to me from grades 1-5 to receive extra reading help. My goal is to help bring them up to grade level. The rewards of my job are fantastic. Helping a child learn to read and watching them discover the joy of books is amazing. In addition, when a child becomes a good reader, their grades in all subjects improve. Reading really is the key to success in all of academics.

The teachers at my school are hard working and dedicated to students. For years, we have hoped for extra support for our struggling readers. This year we were able to create a learning center classroom to meet this need. As the reading intervention teacher I teach reading all day to small groups of struggling readers. Every day, about 50 students come through the learning center to receive lessons. The obstacles in creating a new reading intervention program include finding appropriate and engaging curriculum for students in a variety of grade levels. I am always looking for good reading pieces to supplement my lessons. In addition, I have university students who come to my classroom afterschool to provide tutoring and who need materials as well. My goal is to have lots of materials at their disposal that are easy for them to use with students.

The resources I am requesting are Readers Theater Boxes for grade levels 1-5. These are collections of short plays that are fun for kids to read out loud in small groups. The plays are age and grade level appropriate and are printed on durable cardstock so they can be used over and over again by different groups.

Your help in supporting this project ensures that the 50+ kids who come to the learning center classroom have fun reading materials to use with their teacher and tutors. It gives them a good way to practice reading out loud, which is a critical skill for reading development. Thank you for reading this proposal and taking the time to read a bit about my students!
