Hexagon Happening Hollow: a Book Nook for Special Needs PreK

My students need a Hexagon Happening Hollow and a set of 6 pillows to create soft surroundings for our reading area.

My Students

Where do you like to read? You probably prefer a soft space, curled up on the couch, or perhaps cozy in bed. My book center has seen better days. We have two tired beanbag chairs, and students often bicker over who gets to sit in them. We need a soft, cozy space to seat more students while reading.

My early childhood special education students have been identified as having developmental delays.

They attend a public elementary school and range in age from 2-6 years old. My students are so eager to learn and are excited about coming to school. I want to continue building on their enthusiasm for learning! Our Title One school is located in a high-poverty neighborhood, and 77.6% of our students are identified as economically disadvantaged. For some of our students, our school building is the only safe haven they know from the crime and domestic violence that takes place in the community. Their families struggle day to day to provide just the essentials like housing and food, and school supplies and learning materials like picture books are often considered a luxury.

My Project

I envision a cozy book nook area for this school year. It's time to retire our two old, beat-up beanbag chairs and replace them with a new, inviting place to read that will seat more students comfortably and make the classroom look cheerful. This "Hexagon Happening Hollow" will be just the right size for my preschool aged students and also provide accessible seating for my students with disabilities. The Hexagon is made of rainbow colored foam pieces and creates a soft, enclosed area. It has raised edges just the right height to rest the back against while reading. And a set of six solid-colored cushions in the colors of the rainbow will help individualize the comfort level for each reader. The cushions have covers that zip off for easy washing, and the Hexagon Happening Hollow easily wipes clean.

I hope that this book nook will help create a warm, friendly, and welcoming environment in our classroom, and give my students another reason to love reading and coming to school daily.

It will be the perfect companion to our board book library that was just funded by our friends at DonorsChoose. Thank you so much for helping to foster a love of reading and lifelong literacy in our classroom!
