This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This book has it all. It is realistic fiction infused with fantasy. The themes of racism, family, friendship, loss, encourage thoughtful discussions. It is a book that is difficult to put down. Students laugh and cry throughout this book while grappling with large issues.

My students attend a public elementary school in a high poverty area in New York.

Most receive free or reduced price lunch. Many are reluctant readers who are presently reading below grade. Too many have not experienced the joy of completing a great book. Good literature that is compelling could turn their lives around.

My Project

I have requested a class set of an amazing book, Maniac Magee. This is a captivating story by author Jerry Jerry Spinelli. This is a book that can be used as a shared reading, to improve fluency and model comprehension strategies. The themes lend themselves to small book clubs, where discussions will enable many students to clarify their values and better understand their world. After completion of the book, students can rewrite this book as a screenplay and plan a performance.

This book and the discussions and projects that follow its reading, will engage and motivate my students to both want to read and to think deeply about what they have read.

This book is relevant and so entertaining.
