Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year, we have taken a strengths-based approach to learning. My students have discovered different talents within themselves and how to identify different qualities and characteristics found in others. We are beginning to appreciate others for their strengths, and find new ways to showcase ours.

My scholars are 33 energetic sixth grade GATE students.

They are about to embark on a new journey into middle school. They are a passionate, kind, and resilient bunch that perseveres even through difficult situations. They are eager to learn, and have recently found their own voice in an effort to speak up against social injustices. Because of this passion and drive, my students are motivated to do their part to recognize and honor heroes that emerged from the Holocaust. They want to share stories of people who risked their own safety for the sake of others and who stood up for what was right when surrounded by injustices. This year, they have strengthened their technological abilities, and are learning to integrate new components of media into presentations and videos. While the students are excited to learn the new programming elements, they are held back due to the fact that they don't have the necessary tools to take their progress to the next level.

My Project

I am requesting 1 iPad and 1 case as a vehicle to capture and edit videos about heroes of the Holocaust. Students will use an iPad to edit videos with the app iMovie. This technology will assist my students to experience first-hand historical accounts of social injustices marked by the time in history known as the Holocaust. They will conduct research on the iPads to study how hatred was diffused by those that were willing to put their lives on the line. They will examine the lives of people from all walks of life who were truly unsung heroes of the Holocaust. iPad technology will teach my students to film, edit, and publish these stories to air throughout our campus in an effort to improve acceptance and understanding. They will learn how to trim, edit, and embed media from the past to show how we can learn from history. Scholars will work cohesively, to educate their peers about the Holocaust and how everyone can take a stand to actively fight against intolerances. With this project, we can learn what it takes to find the courage to do what you think is right, even when it feels like the whole world is against you.

Using the built-in camera, we will shoot testimonies of our own and embed multimedia from figures throughout history.

Stories from Holocaust heroes will be brought to life for the students through virtual timelines and multimedia. Students will reflect how these events in history would have been different when responding to the statement, "If I were there!" This will improve my classroom by helping to develop students who practice acceptance and stand up for others who are in need.
