My Project
Every year, as part of our first grade STEM lessons, we hatch chick eggs and observe as the chickens grow in our classroom for several weeks. The children love counting down the days until the hatching starts.
We learn about how the chicks are developing each day inside the eggs.
We candle them to check if they are continuing to develop. Once the chicks have hatched, the students love to name them, observe their behaviors, hold them, care for them, and watch them grow.
The materials will be used to house and care for the chicks for the 6 - 8 weeks they spend in our classroom. Don't worry, my friend is the farmer who supplies the eggs and the grown chicks are brought back to her farm to add to her chicken collection. This year we are even getting eggs from hens we hatched in our classroom a couple of years ago!
