My Students

I have the privilege of teaching in a self-contained, special education kindergarten classroom. Self-contained means all students in the classroom have a diagnosed disability.

My classroom has some of the funniest, caring, and hardworking 5 year-old students.

Every year there is a wide variety of abilities within the classroom in terms of academic, self-help, social-emotional, and fine/gross motor skills. A variety of supports, strategies, and resources are utilized within the classroom to ensure all of the individual needs of our students are being met. Our classroom thrives because we celebrate and utilize the unique gifts each of our students have.

Our classroom is a community of young people working together with their peers and teachers to succeed. We use a variety of methods to communicate with one another, including PECS, CORE Boards, Sign Language, AAC devices, Gestures, and Expressive language. We utilize music and movement to help reinforce instruction, as well as offer a creative outlet for students. We engage in a variety of hands-on activities, games in large and small group settings to give our students multiple opportunities to practice and solidify key foundational academic and interpersonal skills they will need to succeed in 1st Grade.

My Project

Remote and hybrid learning has presented a unique set of circumstances and challenges not only for teachers, but for students and their families. In order to provide the best quality of instruction for all students, no matter their choice of venue for their education, this project was created. Giving simultaneous instruction is difficult for many reasons, but particularly for sound quality. We want to ensure that remote learners are able to focus and hear the explicit and differentiated instruction from their teachers. The sound walls will help us to ensure that remote learners can clearly hear their teacher and limit the noise input from the in person learners. Many of our students require limited distractions and for us to carefully monitory auditory input.

In order to continue giving our students high quality learning materials, our classroom will be using adapted books.

Adapted books allow our students to combine kinesthetic movement with visuals, vocabulary, comprehension, and a fun way to work on fine motor skills. Adaptive books will be used for both in person and remote learners.
