Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a high school teacher in a major city school district. This year I am teaching Beginning Female and Male Chorus, Intermediate Female Chorus, and Mixed Chorus. Teaching music in my district is very challenging because music programs are non-existent in many of our feeder schools. One of my goals and jobs is to prepare my students for college auditions. This can be very challenging because there is a tremendous amount of musical ground to cover.

One of my major obstacles is the fact that 90% of my students do not take private lessons outside of school. I have been very active in writing grants and getting professional partnerships to help bring voice instructors into the school. Students can then participate in lessons during their lunch periods. I would like to record each student’s progress as they participate in these lessons. Having three hand-held digital recorders will give my students the opportunity to record themselves and make an audio portfolio of their progress.

The hand-held digital recorders are very versatile and can be used in a variety of ways. Students can record their lessons. This can help them remember how to sing warm-ups or learn difficult passages because they hear their voice teacher modeling proper technique, through the use of the digital recorder. Students can also record their own performances. Both student and teacher can use these recordings to evaluate their progress over time. I believe that these tools will give me more chances to evaluate my students as they prepare for contests, festivals and eventually their college auditions.

Please consider partnering with my music students. Students love using technology. I know that my students will love the chance to record their performances. This will help them improve in so many areas. Through these recordings: I can assess my students, my students can assess themselves and they can assess each other. This is very important as they prepare their voices and music for future performances, particularly their college endeavors.
