This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A great woman once said, "To read is to live." Help my students live.

My students, by and large, are Latinos and African Americans from socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods.

Many of my students will be the first in their families to graduate high school and the first to attend (and graduate) college. They are smart, motivated and hilarious. They make time in my classroom fly by. In fact, time with them doesn't feel like work.

My Project

Reading is an essential component of learning. In fact, by the time high school and college roll around, there is no escaping it. Sadly, by the time my students come to me, few, if any, have ever read an entire book, which becomes a huge setback in their path to college. I have requested the book "Farewell to Arms" by Ernest Hemingway. This book will, in part, help students catch up on the reading they missed out on in middle school. And more than that, this book will allow for a myriad of lessons and practice on essay writing and literary analysis, which are two skills utterly necessary for college.

This project will help my students prepare for the rigor and challenges of college, for no student can succeed in college without having read books from cover to cover.

This project will allow me to challenge my students and foster their critical thinking and, in effect, prepare them for college and life.
