In the light of recent tragic events, my students bring about hope for a better future. While they hail from all over the globe, speak a multitude of different languages, and come from a wide array of economic situations, they work together in unity. Through playing in a band together, they learn the values of teamwork, tolerance, understanding, and loyalty. We see our wonderful diversity as an asset and a strength. I can only hope that they can carry this notion of setting aside differences to achieve unity into the future.
My students are energetic, determined, and love to share their musical gifts with the school and local community.
They are truly a joy to behold.
My Project
When asked if they had ever heard of the euphonium, one of my curious little 6th graders once asked me if it was a fancy French food! Who knew that this instrument, almost as heavy as its name, would be one of the most popular choices amongst my tiny sixth grade students! The euphonium is shaped like a tuba, but is smaller. It has the range of a trombone, but a more mellow sound. Sadly, with its heavy case, a euphonium weighs as much as a sixth grader (well maybe almost as much...!)
When six of my smallest sixth graders chose to learn the euphonium, I could hardly quell their enthusiam!
They have taken on this new challenge with excitement and determination, but home practice remains to be a challenge due to the size of the instrument. Since our school is in an urban area, where the students either walk or take public buses, a plastic euphonium would be an amazing help to my small, yet strong-willed young musicians!
More than half of students from low‑income households
