Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
All of my students come from low-income households, and many share their homes with other families to make ends meet. For example, some of my students share a living space with other families or live in basements. They all qualify for services such as free lunch. They deal with negative influences daily, such as gangs and violence in their communities. Some have even faced homelessness.
They are the sweetest students that I have had the pleasure to work with.
I love them!
Many of them save their own earnings to buy me small gifts during holidays or draw me beautiful pictures to show their appreciation. They are more than happy to help each other and those that they see are in more need than themselves.
This project would not only benefit my students because they will be so excited to be able to help animals in need, but it will encourage them to get more involved in their learning and become proactive in helping animals.
My Project
Every year, I do a classroom project to raise funds for the World Wildlife Fund organization. I usually have the students create a small invention or innovation item to sell to each other for a small fee. The funds they earn are donated to WWF to purchase a symbolic adoption animal. I usually match their donations in order to just get $55 (the donation price of symbolically adopting 1 animal).
The students learn about endangered species and causes of animals being in danger or extinct.
Once they are informed about each species they vote on which animal to adopt as a class.
When the symbolic animal arrives, the students take turns taking it home and taking care of it for a day. They each get to take the stuffed animal home at least once. At the end of the year, the kids vote on 1 student that deserves to take the animal home for good.
Last year, I was moved to a new school due to class reductions at my old school. Sadly, I didn't feel it was appropriate to continue my WWF project because so many of my students were experiencing financial issues or homelessness. I was buying them shoes or clothes and didn't want to stress the families by asking for donations, no matter how small.
I ended up buying all my students a small Christmas gift because I realized that they weren't getting any at home. Seeing the excitement on their faces when they saw that wrapped gift on their desks has motivated me to try to get them more gifts this year. This project would serve 3 purposes: Help my wonderful students learn about endangered species and animal conservation, help animals in need through this donation, and last provide a gift to my students
