My Students

Every morning my class starts off with a call and response greeting with a brief introduction to our daily lesson. "Good Morning Class!" response: "Good Morning Ms. Samuel" "Happy [Friday]!" response: "Happy Friday Ms. Samuel" "Today is ___ and it is our 38th day of 4th Grade! We'll start with..."

The student population is extremely diverse, and many students are bilingual.

I'm responsible for teaching Math, Science, and Writing to the 40 students enrolled in 4th grade. In addition to the mixture of both general and special education students, I work in a Title I school in the District of Columbia, which means a majority of the students I teach live in low-income housing and require government assistance.

My Project

My school recently split into 2 schools, so getting supplies for both buildings has been a struggle. I've purchased supplies, furniture, books, and rewards from my own budget, but my students need more. Until about 4 weeks ago, I had one of the only working Smart Boards on my campus! And now that it's no longer functional, I'm struggling to reach my visual learners. I have a high concentration of students with ADHD, as well as the largest number of male students in my 5 years of teaching! Studies have shown that male students, as well as students with learning disabilities, need tons of visual representations and hands-on learning activities to keep students engaged in their daily lessons.

My students will be able to see and better follow along to help better organize their thoughts and assignments.

Document cameras are the equivalent of overhead projectors, and you remember how great and fun those were! Please help me help our children.
