My Students

Our students need to learn to use the creative side of their brains because it enhances critical thinking capabilities. By providing students the opportunity to incorporate art into their content area learning, they can demonstrate understanding and mastery of a standard in new and unique ways.

I am the instructional coach at a high poverty elementary school in rural Georgia.

Our students struggle to have basic needs met prior to walking in the door to begin the school day. We work diligently to ensure the students are fed and cared for but they still struggle academically. They lack much of the background knowledge and prior experiences other students bring to the classroom. Although the students may understand a concept, they often have a difficult time demonstrating mastery in a conventional manner. Teachers at my school work hard to build the background knowledge students need to be successful. They spend collaborative planning time discussing options for students to grasp the material being presented. My role allows me to provide professional learning and support to ensure teachers are incorporating the latest research-based strategies in their classrooms. Teachers want to offer more differentiated options for demonstrating mastery of the content they are learning.

My Project

Teachers use much of their own personal funds to stock materials and supplies for their classroom. Due to the limitations this presents, it is often difficult for teachers to offer students a wide range of art projects. This project will allow teachers at my school to have the paint, markers, stamp pads, and tagboard to incorporate art projects into the content areas. By offering students the opportunity to include visual arts as a product for demonstrating understanding and mastery, this project will tap into students' visual learning styles. Teachers will utilize these art materials to offer differentiated products to students. Students will be able to use the materials in a variety of literacy stations, math stations, and projects for science and social studies. By supplying some art materials and providing guidance through professional learning, more teachers will become more comfortable incorporating art options into their assessment toolboxes

These materials will open the door for visual learners to have an arena in which they can excel.

Teachers will have the supplies needed to offer students various options for showcasing their learning in new and unique ways.
