Helping Students with Autism Improve Reading Comprehension
My students need a reading program that will help them with their reading comprehension.

My Students
All students deserve the right to learn how to read and comprehend at the same time. The students in my class love to read, but often cannot understand what they have just read. Please help me teach my students the basics of comprehension.
I teach middle school students with disabilities in New York.
These disabilities range from Down Syndrome to Autism Spectrum Disorder. They attend a public middle school and are in grades six, seven and eight. Most of the students in my class have hyperlexia, a condition where they can read words well, but lack the comprehension skills needed to understand the text.
My Project
I am requesting a reading program that my students will greatly benefit from. It is a set of reading cards that will give students practice in eleven reading comprehension skill areas. They will read the paragraphs and answer questions which are coded by skill area so I know which skills to target. These skills include cause and effect, comparing and contrasting, details, main idea, making inferences and predicting.
Teaching students with disabilities is a very rewarding job.
Although it can be challenging at times, seeing their progress, no matter how big or small, reminds me why I love my job so much.
