Helping Students Understand the Microscopic World

My Students

My students are inquisitive, hands-on learners. I would like to open their young eyes to the microscopic world around them, and in so doing help them understand through direct observation how almost everything around us is made of structures and organisms that can be revealed through microscopy.

As our school’s Library Media Specialist, I want to want to add this technology and hands-on inquiry based learning to our Library Media Center.

We teach approximately 500 students in grades K-5, and this STEM technology will be incorporated into my school-wide technology instruction. This grant will help our students develop their scientific, creative, analytical, and problem solving skills in an engaging and meaningful way.

My Project

The microscope that I chose for this project is the Mustcam UM016 Digital Microscope. A huge benefit of this microscope is that it can project the image to a large monitor so students can view and study these microscopic objects as a class. Instead of one student looking through the lens in real time, the entire class does. Along with the slides and curriculum, this equipment will help our students develop their science, language, and mathematical skills by hypothesizing, investigating, describing, and recording the objects they are viewing in real time, and do so in a comfortable, collaborative learning environment.

The National Science Teachers Association and the National Science Foundation emphasize the importance of incorporating science education and STEM topics in our schools.

Introducing these important topics at the elementary level will help our students gain an early understanding and appreciation for the sciences so they can build on these skills in later years. This project will have a powerful impact on how students understand the intricacies of the microscopic world that is around them.
