My Project

My students and I are lucky enough to be in a one-to-one Chromebook classroom with access to a digital science curriculum that supports struggling readers—but what happens when 24 Chromebooks are reading aloud or narrating videos (at varying paces) all at once? Distraction is the answer. The middle school supply list asks students to bring their own USB headphones; however, not all of my students can afford a set or replace them if they break or get lost. When that happens, students have limited options: borrow a pair from me (if any remain), borrow from a peer who isn’t using theirs (for a short time), or listen at low volume—causing loss of focus, uncomfortable crouching, and constant replays.

In past years, I’ve run successful DonorsChoose projects to build a class set of headphones and replacements, however, because these headphones are used daily not just in science, but also in LA, Math, or when working in the office, they experience a high rate of wear and tear.

Many have already reached the end of their lifespan in the first year of use!

This struggle is even more urgent during state testing when every student is required to have their own pair. By donating to this project, you’ll provide equitable access to headphones for every student who enters my classroom.

Additionally, to encourage responsibility and celebrate achievement, I will be introducing wireless headphones as a special privilege for our “Scientist of the Month.” This incentive will reward students who demonstrate curiosity, perseverance, and excellence in science.
