Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Reading is dreaming with your eyes open." I want all my students to experience this magic - to be able to love to read and to reach for books as a choice, not as an assignment. I want for them to be able to see how dreams can come true through stories.
I work in a 100% free or reduced lunch school with the majority of the students being second language learners.
Many of them do not have access to books or the Internet at home. For some, school is the first opportunity to hear a book read aloud or to see a library full of books.
My Project
My students need six student CD players, Fluency Skills Listening Centers Set, Storyteller Read-Along Library and six soft seats for our listening centers and materials to help them become better readers!Students who struggle to learn to read need choice and the ability to hear what good reading is - out loud. These listening centers can model for students correct phrasing, fluency, and intonation. Moreover, listening to books gives students access to great literature that because of reading difficulties they may not be able to read just yet. Students are taught to track the print word as they listen and this exposure helps improve their own reading skills tremendously.
The Matthew Effect states that the less students are exposed to books and read, the worse of a reader they will become.
Conversely, the more students are exposed to books and the more they read, they will become much better readers. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to make sure that my students have many books to choose from, many opportunities to read, and much exposure to great literature. I have seen how listening centers and exposure to great literature can improve my students' reading skills!
