Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach chemistry to a diverse group of artistic students at a Title I visual and performing arts school in downtown Los Angeles. Students come to our public high school from all over the city to receive a top notch education in both academics and their chosen art form (music, dance, visual or theater) and go on to study at some of the top academic colleges and art schools across the country. When my students start reading about all of the chemicals they come into contact with every day, they are surprised, curious, and eager to learn more!
I am always looking for ways to motivate my students in my classroom with innovative and exciting learning opportunities.
My Project
With the introduction of Next Generation Science Standards into classrooms across America, science instruction has changed. This chart paper will dramatically change how science is discussed in my classroom.
We started this model last year and the post-it note chart paper was the single most influential resource in encouraging authentic scientific discussion in my classroom.
We've run out of last year's supply and are hoping to fund another year's worth of scientific discussion.
With these materials, students will create argument poster presentations after they complete an inquiry lab analyzing data and will connect that data to the lab's guiding question. These presentations are essential to deepening my students' understanding of key scientific concepts as they design and implement their own inquiry.
My class has always focused on environmental topics as they relate to chemistry such as water contamination and garbage/landfill design. With this chart paper, my artistic students will have an appropriate outlet to express their understanding of science in my classroom. This project is going to be so great for my students, thank you for contributing!
