Helping Special Education Students with Survival Skills

My students need entertaining materials that help keep their attention and help teach them the skills they need to be successful in school and in life.

My Students

Do you remember how fun it was to read a storybook as a child and wanting to be the characters in the book? My student can have that chance with "Superflex" and Julia Cook.

My students are second, third, and fourth grade elementary special education students in a low income school of Utah.

My students have moderate to severe learning and behavior disorders. They are in a self-contained learning center classroom to help support their many needs. My students are easily distracted by anything that is around unless they are provided with fun and entertaining materials to help keep their attention to learn.

My Project

I am requesting fourteen different books. The first are the "Superflex" curriculum books. These books break down each social skill into fun steps that the students can learn and apply in their lives. They also have superhero characters they can relate to. I am also requesting a collection of illustrated books that teach a variety of social skills. The social skills that they help teach are: dealing with anger and bullies, following directions, completing work, using manners, how to be a friend, avoiding tattling and dealing with feelings. These books will help me teach the social skills the students are struggling with in a fun way and give the students an opportunity to relate to and respond to how they should do things differently then the characters in the stories.

I have found that my elementary students with disabilities have learned better with stories they can relate to than with any other thing I have tried.

I have wanted to purchase and build my instructional library from my own budget and have not been able to. My students and I would be forever grateful if you are able to and willing to help our classroom with these valuable and much needed materials in teaching important social skills.
